Domain Name Prices in Ghana: Registration, Renewal, and Transfer Costs

By Bridget Afful | Last updated on October 16, 2026

Domain name prices in Ghana vary by extension, the type of transaction and the registration term. To compare the real cost, look at three figures: what you pay to register the name, what you pay to renew it and what a transfer costs if you move its registration management.

At the time of writing, Aveshost lists a standard .com at GH₵200 for a one-year registration and GH₵200 for a one-year renewal. A .com.gh is listed at GH₵800 for each of those transactions. Introductory prices for some other extensions are lower, but their renewal rates can be substantially higher.

This guide gives you a clear GHS comparison, explains the differences between the fees and shows how to budget beyond the first year. Use our live domain pricing table and the quote for your exact name before ordering. Prices and promotions can change, and premium names can have different pricing.

Domain name prices in Ghana: current comparison

The table below compares selected standard Aveshost domain rates in Ghana cedis. Registration and renewal figures are for one year. Transfer figures are the listed transfer prices; the registration extension and process must be checked for the specific domain type.

These are domain charges, not a complete website package. Review the final checkout for the exact name, term, any selected services and applicable taxes or fees. An extension’s general price is not a guarantee that every name ending in that extension is available at that rate.

Read the columns separately. For example, .org is listed at GH₵220 to register, GH₵230 to renew and GH₵215 to transfer. A lower transfer price does not change the published renewal rate for the following period.

Three domain costs to compare: first registration, renewal and transfer of registration management

Understand registration, renewal and transfer fees

Registration secures an available domain for an agreed term. Renewal extends a registration you already hold. A registrar transfer moves registration management to another registrar or provider; it does not change the domain’s spelling or automatically move the website content.

A transfer is also different from selling a domain or changing the registrant. Buying an already registered name from its owner can involve a separately negotiated price. That acquisition price is not the standard registration or transfer fee shown in a domain price table.

Compare the same extension and period. A one-year introductory registration, a two-year order and an annual renewal quote are different offers. If a price is described as “from” or “first year”, check the terms behind that description before using it in your budget.

Keep a short record of the domain, quoted registration rate, renewal rate, transfer rate and included term. This is particularly useful when managing several business names or comparing a .com with a .com.gh and an introductory promotional extension.

What the registration price covers

A registration charge covers the agreed registration period for the exact available name. It does not purchase permanent ownership of that address. You retain the registration by meeting the relevant terms and renewing it when required.

Search the full name you intend to use, including its extension. A name available under .shop can already be taken under .com. Check the spelling, word order and extension before paying; changing the website’s display name later does not rename the registered domain.

Look for premium pricing on the exact result. Some names cost more than the general extension rate, and premium renewal terms can also differ. Ask for the registration and renewal amounts together when the search result is marked premium.

The domain and the services attached to it are separate. You can register a name before building the website, then connect hosting or email when ready. Registering the name does not by itself create a functioning store, mailbox or booking portal.

Use accurate registrant and account contact details, with the business retaining control where the name represents a company. An agency or designer can help place the order, but your organisation should know who controls renewal, recovery and domain management.

How renewal costs affect your budget

The renewal rate is the recurring cost of keeping the registration active for another term. Check it before choosing a discounted first-year extension. A low launch price is useful, but it should fit the project’s ongoing budget as well.

For example, the listed .xyz registration is GH₵50, while its annual renewal is GH₵240. The .shop registration is GH₵70, with a GH₵600 annual renewal. These differences are visible in the comparison table and belong in your plan from the start.

A renewal price can change over time. Registry pricing, provider rates and currency pricing can affect future charges. Use the current rate for planning, review the renewal invoice when issued and avoid treating today’s price as a permanent commitment for every future year.

If you want to register or renew for several years, check the actual multi-year quote. Do not multiply a first-year promotional rate by the number of years unless the offer explicitly applies to every year in that order.

Keep domain renewal separate from hosting renewal. Both services can be essential to your website, but paying one invoice does not necessarily renew the other. Review which service each invoice covers and confirm the updated registration term after payment is processed.

What you pay when transferring a domain

Aveshost’s pricing table lists transfer charges alongside registration and renewal. At the time of writing, a standard .com transfer is GH₵200, .org is GH₵215 and .com.gh is GH₵800. Check the exact domain and required process before starting.

For transfers covered by ICANN’s Transfer Policy, completion normally adds one year to the existing registration, subject to the policy’s maximum remaining term. Confirm how that applies to your domain, especially if it is close to expiry, recently renewed or already registered far into the future.

Country-code domains, including Ghanaian extensions, have their own registry processes. Do not apply every generic-domain transfer rule to .com.gh or another country-code name. Ask us to confirm the documents, authorisation and term treatment for the extension you are moving.

For relevant generic domains, prepare the current registrar account, transfer status and authorisation code. ICANN’s transfer FAQs explain transfer restrictions, including certain 60-day periods after registration, a prior transfer or a registrant change. Check eligibility before timing the move.

Moving registration management does not itself migrate website files, databases, mailboxes or DNS hosting. Preserve the required nameservers and records, and arrange any separate migration deliberately. A registration transfer can keep existing services in place when their supporting DNS and hosting remain correctly configured.

If your immediate goal is simply to move the website to Aveshost hosting, ask whether changing the appropriate DNS records is enough. You do not always need to transfer the domain’s registration to use a different hosting provider.

Compare .com with Ghanaian domain extensions

A .com is a familiar option for businesses, personal brands and projects serving several markets. At the listed standard rates, it also has a lower annual registration and renewal cost than .com.gh. Choose the extension that fits the brand and audience alongside the budget.

A .com.gh provides a Ghanaian domain identity. Our Ghana domain page also presents options such as .org.gh, .net.gh and .edu.gh. These are distinct namespaces, so confirm the category, eligibility requirements and any supporting information for the exact extension.

The table lists GH₵800 registration, renewal and transfer rates for the selected Ghanaian extensions. That pricing does not mean every category has identical eligibility or administration. An educational or organisational namespace should be selected for a suitable applicant.

Registering a .com.gh does not automatically include the matching .com, and the reverse is also true. If you want both, budget for two registrations and two ongoing renewals. Each name has its own availability, expiry and management record.

A domain extension can support recognition and positioning, but it does not guarantee search rankings or establish professional licensing. Choose a clear name, publish useful content and maintain a dependable website rather than relying on the extension alone to create trust.

Three-year domain budget combining one registration term with two annual renewals and separate hosting or email costs

Calculate the cost over three years

A practical comparison uses the first registration term plus the renewals needed to cover the following years. For a one-year registration followed by two one-year renewals, the calculation is registration price plus two renewal charges.

The examples below use the listed rates unchanged across the illustration. They are planning examples, not a guaranteed multi-year checkout quote or a promise about future renewal prices. Hosting, email, selected extras and applicable taxes or fees are excluded.

ExtensionRegistration + two renewalsIllustrative total
.comGH₵200 + GH₵200 + GH₵200GH₵600.00
.orgGH₵220 + GH₵230 + GH₵230GH₵680.00
.xyzGH₵50 + GH₵240 + GH₵240GH₵530.00
.onlineGH₵70 + GH₵400 + GH₵400GH₵870.00
.shopGH₵70 + GH₵600 + GH₵600GH₵1,270.00
.com.ghGH₵800 + GH₵800 + GH₵800GH₵2,400.00

The .xyz example totals GH₵530 across three years, compared with GH₵600 for .com at the listed rates. The lower introductory .shop price produces a GH₵1,270 three-year illustration because its annual renewal is GH₵600.

This comparison is about the domain cost, not a verdict on which extension is best for every business. A shop may deliberately choose .shop because it fits the brand. The useful decision is to understand the recurring cost before committing to that address.

Separate domain costs from hosting and email

A domain is the address. Hosting provides the environment where the website runs. Email service provides mailboxes and related features. A domain-only quote should not be compared directly with a package that includes a website, hosting, email and ongoing support.

Choose the website service for the application you will run. Aveshost WordPress hosting supports WordPress projects, while WooCommerce hosting is an option to review for a store. The hosting plan’s capacity and features are a separate part of the project budget.

For a professional address using your domain, review Aveshost business email. Decide how many people need their own accounts and whether role addresses should be aliases or shared mailboxes. Registering the domain does not itself tell you the number of included mailboxes.

Check the scope of any included privacy, DNS, SSL or forwarding feature. Availability and setup can depend on the extension and selected service. A domain privacy feature does not hide information you publish on your own website, and an SSL certificate still needs a compatible, correctly configured website.

Review optional items before checkout. Keep the services you need, understand their separate renewal terms and remove unneeded selections. A clear order should make the domain term, hosting billing cycle and any add-on charges easy to distinguish.

Compare promotional and free-domain offers

Promotional pricing can reduce the cost of starting a project. Compare the exact extension, eligible name, included term and renewal price. A first-year discount should be described as a first-year discount, rather than as the permanent annual cost.

Aveshost advertises free-domain offers with eligible annual hosting packages. Check the selected plan, billing period, available extensions and offer terms. Do not treat a free-domain headline as applying automatically to every hosting plan or every domain category.

Ask what happens after the included term and whether the domain renews separately. Keep the domain in the company’s controlled account and check the rules if you later change or cancel hosting. An included registration does not make a business address free forever.

For an existing domain, check whether the offer supports a transfer or only a new registration. A free new-domain offer and a paid transfer are different transactions. Choose the route that preserves the name your business already uses.

Compare the package as a whole. A domain discount is useful when the hosting and support also meet the project’s needs. Keep the decision tied to the website you intend to run and the recurring total you can maintain.

Avoid expiry, restoration fees and service disruption

Renew early enough to avoid relying on last-minute payment processing. Keep account contacts current, review renewal reminders and check that any automatic-renewal arrangement can actually collect payment. A setting labelled auto-renew is not evidence that the renewal transaction succeeded.

After expiry, your website and domain-based email can be disrupted. Recovery options depend on the extension and the domain’s actual status. Contact support promptly rather than waiting for a grace period that may not apply to your name.

Our live pricing table includes grace and redemption information, and the values differ between extensions. Restoration can involve an additional charge beyond ordinary renewal. Check the current status and a full recovery quote instead of treating the regular renewal price as the only possible cost.

For applicable generic domains, ICANN’s transfer FAQs explain that a domain already in redemption must be restored through its current registrar before transfer. Moving providers is not a substitute for completing the required recovery process.

Use a monitored recovery contact that remains accessible if the domain’s own email stops working. Protect the account with appropriate authentication and maintain authorised access for the business. Losing control of the domain can affect the website, email and customer communication together.

Register or transfer your domain with Aveshost

Start at Aveshost’s domain search and enter the exact name you want. Compare suitable alternatives if it is unavailable. Check that the spelling and extension match your brand before continuing with the order.

Review the quoted term, registration price and renewal rate. Confirm whether the name is standard or premium, and check any eligibility requirements. Select the required services deliberately and review the final payable total in GHS.

For an existing name, use our domain transfer route. Confirm transfer eligibility and authorisation requirements first. Keep the existing website, DNS and email services running until any separately planned migration has been completed and checked.

After registration or transfer, confirm the domain appears in your account and check the registration term and contact details. Connect the required DNS records for your website and email. Test those services after changes rather than relying only on an order acknowledgement.

Keep your domain information in a business-controlled record: provider account, responsible administrator, renewal instructions and recovery route. For help comparing extensions, transfer requirements or the full website package, contact Aveshost support with the exact domain and the service you need.

Frequently asked questions

How much are domain name prices in Ghana?

At the time of writing, selected Aveshost standard registrations include .com at GH₵200, .net at GH₵235 and .com.gh at GH₵800 for one year. Check the live pricing table and exact-name quote before ordering.

What is the difference between registration and renewal?

Registration starts the agreed term for an available new domain. Renewal extends a name you already hold. Introductory registration prices can differ from the annual renewal rate.

How much does a .com domain renew for at Aveshost?

At the time of writing, the listed standard .com one-year renewal is GH₵200. Review the renewal invoice and current price because future rates can change.

How much does a .com.gh domain cost?

The listed .com.gh registration, one-year renewal and transfer prices are each GH₵800 at the time of writing. Confirm the exact name, process and final order total.

Is the cheapest first-year domain also cheapest over three years?

Not necessarily. Compare registration plus the required renewals. Using the listed rates unchanged, .shop illustrates GH₵70 plus two GH₵600 renewals, while .com illustrates three GH₵200 charges.

Does a domain transfer include website migration?

No. It moves registration management. Website files, databases, mailboxes and DNS services require their own plan. You can often use different hosting without moving registration management.

Does a transfer always add one year?

Transfers covered by ICANN’s Transfer Policy normally extend the existing registration by one year, subject to its term limits. Country-code domains and particular renewal situations need an extension-specific check.

Is a domain included free with every hosting plan?

Check the selected Aveshost offer. Free-domain eligibility depends on the hosting package, billing period, extension and terms. Review the renewal cost after any included term.

Are hosting and business email included in the domain price?

The comparison table shows domain charges. Review the selected package for any hosting, mailboxes, privacy features and other services, including their separate billing and renewal terms.

What should I do if my domain has expired?

Contact support promptly with the exact domain. Recovery depends on its extension and current status and can involve restoration charges. Do not rely on a generic grace period or expect a transfer will bypass restoration.
