Wix vs WordPress in Ghana: What Wix and Squarespace Really Cost

By Bridget Afful | Last updated on October 16, 2026

Wix vs WordPress in Ghana is a cost comparison that needs more than a monthly price tag. Wix and Squarespace bundle website-building tools with hosting and platform maintenance. Self-hosted WordPress gives you more choice over hosting, extensions and administration, but those choices still require a budget.

A focused WordPress setup keeps recurring costs low and gives your business control over hosting and extensions. Your total budget includes the plan, exchange rate, paid tools, design and maintenance. Compare those costs together to see which platform delivers the right value for your business.

Wix supports Ghanaian Mobile Money through Paystack. WordPress and WooCommerce also support local payment integrations. Choose a platform that fits your merchant account, checkout requirements and budget.

Wix vs WordPress in Ghana: compare the whole service

Start with a brief: how many pages, whether you sell online, who updates content and what integrations you need. A five-page consultancy site, a hotel booking website and an online shop have different costs. Compare products that can actually deliver the same required outcome.

This comparison covers self-hosted WordPress: the open-source software running on hosting you choose. At Aveshost, we provide hosting for this setup. The cost breakdown separates published subscription prices, hosting charges and example budgets for maintenance and additional tools.

A fair comparison includes cash and staff time. If a business owner spends hours maintaining plugins, those hours still have a cost even when no invoice is issued. Equally, paying for a website builder does not eliminate the work of writing content, checking enquiries or managing products.

Website ownership costs include hosting or platform, domain and email, apps and maintenance, fees and migration

At the time of writing, the public pricing pages displayed the subscription rates used below. For a consistent reference conversion, we used the Bank of Ghana’s interbank midpoint of GH₵11.6750 per US dollar. Your card issuer applies its own conversion rate and any relevant fees.

The Wix pricing page stated that its displayed monthly equivalents were for annual subscriptions paid in full, with taxes additional and pricing varying by location. Light is the basic website tier; Core includes accepting payments. Do not use the Light price as the cost of a Wix shop.

The Squarespace figures use the US-dollar prices displayed with annual billing selected at the time of writing. Regional pricing and available plans vary. Confirm the plan, billing currency, payment term and final charges at checkout.

Our Professional hosting plan includes SSL, email accounts and weekly backups. At the time of writing, the advertised rate is GH₵16 per month, equivalent to GH₵192 over twelve months. Budget separately for design, domain renewal, premium plugins and ongoing application care, then confirm your billing cycle and order total.

Amounts are rounded to two decimal places, with annual amounts calculated from unrounded rates. These base charges form the starting point for your budget. Add applicable taxes, card conversion charges, optional services and implementation costs. Check current prices before ordering.

When the cost gap reaches three times or more

The cost gap reaches three times or more when a builder subscription is compared with a lean WordPress setup. Paid extensions, professional maintenance and design work change that calculation. Include the services your business needs on both sides.

Use this illustrative annual WordPress budget for a small brochure website: GH₵192 hosting plus a GH₵200 domain allowance gives GH₵392 before other costs. The domain allowance is a planning figure, not a current registration or renewal quote. This setup uses a legitimate free theme, free core functionality and owner-managed maintenance. The total excludes the value of the owner’s time.

Against the GH₵392 cash budget, Wix Light is about 6.08 times as much and Squarespace Basic about 4.29 times as much. The WordPress budget covers an owner-maintained site; the builder subscriptions include platform maintenance. A qualifying builder subscription may include an eligible first-year domain, while later renewals need a separate budget.

Now add an illustrative GH₵1,200 annual maintenance allowance to WordPress. The budget becomes GH₵1,592: Wix Light is about 1.50 times that amount, and Squarespace Basic about 1.06 times. Add a further GH₵600 of paid tools and WordPress reaches GH₵2,192, which exceeds the Squarespace Basic base subscription shown above. These allowances are examples, not Aveshost service quotes.

Calculate your total over the same period with the same required features. A focused WordPress site with capable in-house care keeps recurring costs down. Extensive custom development, premium tools and professional care increase the budget. Define the scope first, then compare the saving.

Count domains, email, apps and renewal costs

Check domain costs in year one and at renewal. A free domain benefit may cover only selected extensions or a new registration for a limited period. It does not mean every domain extension or every renewal is included. Keep the domain in an account your business controls.

Separate business email from the website platform. Some hosting plans include mailboxes, while some builder offers bundle a time-limited email promotion or require an additional subscription. Compare mailbox capacity, support and renewal terms. Our business email is an option when your organisation needs a separate email service.

List bookings, membership access, email campaigns, automation, stock management and other paid functions. Ask whether each is native to the plan, an extra application or a custom integration. A low initial price can change when the website needs several separate services.

Distinguish platform transaction charges from payment processor fees, and distinguish physical-product sales from digital content or memberships. The same platform can have different fee schedules for different functions. A “zero platform transaction fee” label does not mean your payment processor works for free.

Foreign-currency billing adds a separate variable. If the exchange rate used for a subscription increases by 10%, its cedi conversion increases by roughly 10% before other charges, even when the foreign-currency price stays unchanged. A bank may also apply its own rate or fee. Local GHS billing removes that direct conversion step for that invoice, but does not guarantee prices will never change.

Builders offer monthly and annual billing options. Annual plans often display a monthly equivalent and charge the full annual amount upfront. Record the commitment, cancellation terms and next renewal total, and compare those with the billing options for hosting and extensions.

Check Ghana Mobile Money support before choosing

If you are choosing the best website builder for Ghana MoMo payments, test the exact integration before committing to a large build. Customer payment methods and the method you use to pay your website subscription are different questions.

Wix: its official Paystack integration guide explicitly lists Ghana with cards and Mobile Money. It also says the Wix account currency must match the Paystack account currency. You need a suitable payments-enabled plan and an eligible, verified merchant setup.

Squarespace: Ghana was not listed in the Squarespace Payments supported-country table checked for this article. Its processor documentation lists alternative payment options. Check that the chosen processor accepts your Ghana-registered business and supports the payment methods your customers need. Test the full checkout before building the store.

WordPress and WooCommerce: Paystack documents a WooCommerce integration, and its payment-channel documentation covers Ghana Mobile Money. Match the maintained plugin, store currency and merchant account. Core WordPress alone does not add a functioning MoMo checkout.

An external payment link or embedded checkout may be useful for a limited workflow. It is not automatically equivalent to an integrated cart, stock update, refund process and order confirmation. Budget for the connection and administration work, and never use false business-location details to obtain a processor account.

What a WordPress website actually needs

Self-hosted WordPress gives you a configurable website foundation. For a simple business site, begin with a supported theme, core blocks, clear service pages, a contact form and HTTPS. Avoid installing a large collection of plugins before you know which features you need.

Add WooCommerce when you need a store, then configure products, delivery rules, payment methods and customer notifications. Bookings, subscriptions, courses and specialised portals can require additional extensions or development. Check licences, supported versions and recurring costs before including them in a proposal.

Choose hosting for the actual workload. A small brochure site and a busy store do not need the same resources. Our managed WordPress hosting and WooCommerce hosting provide other options when the project needs a different service scope. Choose the plan and management scope that cover your application’s requirements.

Keep the business in control of its domain, content, hosting account and administrator access. Agree who owns custom work and which commercial licences can move. The ability to obtain files and a database is valuable, but it does not guarantee that every proprietary theme or service can be replaced without work.

Build a maintenance plan before launch. Include updates, backups, access reviews and functional checks. If nobody in the business can own those tasks, include a realistic care budget. A cheap site that stops taking enquiries or loses orders is not a successful saving.

Understand ownership and the cost of moving

Owning your words and images is different from being able to run the entire website on another server. Wix states that its sites rely on its infrastructure and cannot be exported as a complete working site to another host. Moving to WordPress normally involves rebuilding the design and functions while transferring the content and data that can be obtained.

Squarespace supports exporting some content to a WordPress-compatible XML file. The export does not recreate the full design, custom CSS, store pages and all other features. Check which records need a separate export or rebuild, and ensure images actually exist in the new media library before closing the old site.

A WordPress hosting move generally involves files, database, configuration and DNS changes. It still needs testing, supported software and correct licences. A complex page-builder design or external subscription service can create dependencies even within WordPress.

Before buying any platform, ask for an exit checklist: content export, product and customer records, media files, domain access, email configuration and URL redirects. Keep your own copies of original content and business records. A domain transfer by itself does not migrate a website or email.

Include migration work in a multi-year budget if a move is likely. However, do not move a functioning website merely to chase a lower hosting bill. Compare the rebuild cost and operational risk against the expected recurring savings and the value of any new features.

Compare maintenance, security and support fairly

A website builder subscription pays for convenience as well as hosting. The provider operates its platform and editor, while you still manage content, user access, business settings and integrations. That can suit an owner who wants fewer software-maintenance decisions.

With WordPress, someone must take responsibility for application updates and compatibility. Hosting support and custom-code support are different services. Agree who responds when a plugin update breaks a form, a payment callback fails or a site starts sending unexpected mail.

Use our website security checklist to plan unique passwords, two-factor authentication, trusted software, appropriate access and tested backups. Do not use nulled premium themes or plugins to make the budget appear lower; untrusted modified packages can create a much larger recovery cost.

Performance needs evidence too. WordPress is not automatically faster because you own the hosting, and a builder is not automatically slow because it is hosted remotely. Test the actual pages, image sizes, third-party scripts and checkout from your audience’s devices and connections. Our WordPress speed guide provides practical optimisation steps.

Ask for a realistic support process: contact channel, responsibilities, backup retention and recovery steps. A promise of support is more useful when you know which problems it covers and what information the team needs to investigate.

Choose the platform that fits your business

Business priorityWhat to favour in your assessment
Simple brochure site and minimal technical administrationA builder may justify its bundle; compare with a properly maintained WordPress quote
GHS budgeting and control over hostingSelf-hosted WordPress can offer a strong fit
Ghana MoMo salesEvaluate Wix with Paystack and WooCommerce with an appropriate integration; verify Squarespace workflow first
Custom local integrations or portalsAssess WordPress development and ongoing maintenance against platform capabilities
Existing working builder siteCalculate savings after rebuild costs before switching
No budget or person for ongoing careReduce scope or buy a service that clearly covers the responsibilities

For a local shop, payment reliability and accurate stock may matter more than a small subscription difference. For a consultancy, fast content editing and a form that reaches the right inbox may be the deciding factors. Choose around the operating workflow, then compare the price.

If you are asking why Wix is expensive in Ghana, separate the foreign-currency conversion, selected tier, paid applications and the value of its bundle. The bill may be more than you need to pay for your use case, but that conclusion should come from the scope and final quote.

Plan a move to WordPress without rushing the switch

Inventory your existing pages, products, orders, forms, bookings, memberships and integrations. Save permitted exports and original media. Record important URLs and pages receiving search traffic. Identify the features that need a separate export, replacement or rebuild.

Build the WordPress version on a protected staging address while the existing site remains available. Recreate essential functions, import supported content and test mobile layouts. Keep staging out of search results and disable real notifications and payment processing during development tests.

Plan redirects from old URLs to their relevant new equivalents. Confirm titles, metadata, canonical URLs and sitemap settings. Check that images load from the new system and that forms reach the correct inbox. Design changes or a platform migration can affect search visibility; do not promise an automatic ranking improvement.

For an active store, agree how new orders and changing stock will be handled around cutover. Reconcile payment and order records before accepting live traffic on the new checkout. Preserve mail-related DNS records and test sending and receiving after any DNS change.

Keep the old service active until the new site and required records have been verified and retained. Ask our team to scope the move: a Wix or Squarespace rebuild is different from transferring an existing WordPress installation. Our website migration guide explains wider continuity and email considerations, but its hosting-transfer steps do not remove builder export limitations.

Your website budget and buying checklist

Ask for a first-year total and a renewal-year total, each with the same required functions. Include design, domain, email, platform or hosting, extensions, maintenance, payment fees and any migration work. Separate confirmed quotes from planning allowances.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress always cheaper than Wix or Squarespace in Ghana?

No. A simple self-managed WordPress site can cost less, but design, paid tools, maintenance and integrations can change the total.

Do Wix and Squarespace always cost three times more?

No. The ratio depends on the plans and costs included. Compare equivalent features and responsibilities over the same billing period.

Can Wix accept Mobile Money in Ghana?

Yes. Wix officially documents Ghanaian Mobile Money through Paystack, subject to the plan, account currency and eligible merchant setup.

Can a Ghanaian business use Squarespace Payments?

Ghana was not listed in the supported-country table checked for this article. Verify current processor eligibility and payment workflow before committing.

Can WooCommerce accept Ghanaian MoMo?

An appropriate integration such as Paystack can support it. Configure the eligible merchant account and store correctly, then test payment and order status.

Are the cedi subscription figures guaranteed checkout prices?

No. They are reference conversions from observed pricing. Regional offers, taxes, card rates and billing terms can change the final amount.

Does a free first-year domain include every renewal?

No. Check eligible extensions, registration conditions and renewal prices separately.

Can I export a Wix site and run it unchanged on WordPress hosting?

No. Wix says its complete site relies on its infrastructure. Moving normally involves content transfer and a rebuild of design and functions.

Does Squarespace export everything to WordPress?

No. Some content can be exported, but design and several content types or features require separate handling. Verify media and records before cancelling.

Can Aveshost help compare costs or plan a migration?

Yes. Share your feature requirements and current bill with our team so we can scope hosting, maintenance and any rebuild or transfer work.
